Tap replacement in Singapore is one of the most common plumbing jobs, whether it is a dripping kitchen tap, a worn basin mixer or a new washing machine tap. A like-for-like swap is usually quick and priced per tap, while changing the type of tap or the pipework takes longer. Before booking, photograph the tap and the pipes underneath, and say whether you are supplying the new tap.

Repair or replace?

A dripping or leaking tap does not always need replacing. Worn washers, cartridges or seals can sometimes be replaced, which is cheaper than a new tap. Older taps, corroded bodies, cracked parts and taps where spare parts are no longer available are usually better replaced.

If water is leaking under a sink or basin, turn off the isolation valve below it if there is one, and keep water away from electrical points. The leak repair guide explains how to describe leaks that are not from the tap itself.

Choosing a new tap

Check what the new tap needs to fit. Basin and sink taps come in different mounting types, such as a single hole, a wall-mounted tap or a separate hot and cold arrangement. Note whether you have hot water to the tap and how the existing tap connects. A photo of the tap from above and of the pipes underneath helps the plumber confirm compatibility.

Kitchen taps vary in height and spout reach, so make sure a new tap suits the sink and does not splash. If you want a pull-out spray, a filter tap or a mixer where there was a single tap before, ask whether extra pipework is needed.

Who can do the work?

PUB sets out which plumbing works must be carried out by a licensed plumber and which simple tasks are treated differently. PUB's requirements for plumbing works are the official reference. A straight replacement may be treated differently from work that changes the supply pipes, so check PUB's page and ask the company to confirm. The licensed plumber guide explains what to ask.

Supplying your own tap

Many households buy taps themselves and pay a plumber to install them. If you do, keep the box, instructions and all parts, and check that the tap includes the flexible hoses and fittings. Ask the plumber whether they install customer-supplied taps and whether that changes the warranty.

Some plumbers supply and install taps as a package. Compare the total price, the tap brand and model and the warranty. If a supplied tap leaks soon after installation, you need to know whether to contact the shop, the manufacturer or the plumber.

How tap replacement is priced

Plumbers usually price tap work per tap, with different rates for repairing a tap, replacing a basic tap and installing a mixer or a specialised tap. The tap itself may be included or supplied by you. Extra work, such as replacing corroded valves, changing pipework or fixing hidden leaks, costs more.

The published rates further down this page come from company websites in the HomezyPro directory, one matching rate per company with its source and capture date. Check each source for what type of tap is covered and whether the tap is included.

  • Is the price for repair or replacement, and for which type of tap?
  • Is the tap supplied, or do I provide it?
  • Are new hoses or isolation valves included?
  • Is there a call-out charge or minimum fee?
  • What warranty applies, and is GST included?

Washing machine and other taps

Washing machine taps, bib taps in service yards and taps for water heaters are common jobs too. A washing machine tap that leaks or will not turn off fully should be fixed before it floods the floor. Ask the plumber to check the hose connection at the same time.

Taps connected to a water heater may involve both plumbing and the heater's connections. The water heater guide explains how heater connections are usually handled.

Preparing for the visit

Clear the cabinet under the sink or basin so the plumber can reach the pipes. Have the new tap and its parts ready, and know where your home's main water valve is in case the supply needs to be shut off. Tell household members that water will be off briefly.

After the job, run the tap on hot and cold, check for drips at the spout and the base, and look under the sink for leaks. Check again after a few hours. Keep the invoice and the tap's warranty card.

Tap replacement questions

Can I fix a dripping tap without replacing it?

Often, yes. A worn washer or cartridge can sometimes be replaced. If the tap is old, corroded or spare parts are unavailable, replacement may be better value. Ask the plumber to check.

How long does it take to replace a tap?

A like-for-like replacement is usually quick. Changing to a different type of tap or replacing corroded valves takes longer. Ask the plumber for an estimate based on photos.

Do I need a licensed plumber to replace a tap?

It depends on the work. PUB sets out which plumbing works need a licensed plumber and which simple tasks are treated differently. Check PUB's official page and ask the company to confirm.

Should I buy the tap myself?

You can, as long as it fits your sink or basin and includes the needed fittings. Some plumbers supply and install taps as a package. Compare total cost and warranties.
