Published power point installation rates

For the most common unit (per job), the lowest published power point installation rates from 7 companies run from S$28 to S$90 per job (middle rate S$75), for one 13A socket point. The middle figure is a real published rate, not an average. Each figure is one company's own advertised rate with its conditions, not a quote.

9 companies publish a power point line. 7 of them price per job, and their published rates run from S$28 to S$90 per job, with S$75 in the middle. That middle figure is one company's real published rate, not an average. The scope, as printed, is one 13A socket point. For other electrical jobs, see electrician costs in Singapore.

The other 2 lines use different units. One company prints "Power socket installation" from S$60 to S$130+ per point. Another prints "Single Power Point" at S$65, printed without a unit. Neither is a per job rate.

As printed, the lines mix new and replacement work. Only one line says its work is non-conceal (surface). No line prices a trunking run or a dedicated 15A or 20A point.

Power socket replacement or adding a new point

Replacing a socket means swapping an existing outlet on wiring that is already there. Adding a point means running new wiring to a spot with no socket, so it usually involves more work. For more on the job, see power socket installation.

The printed lines keep the two jobs apart. One company prints "Replace Power Socket" from S$30 per job, while another prints "Additional power socket point" from S$80 per job. These are single lines from different companies, so treat them as a guide, not a rule.

Even a straight swap is licensed work. HDB's home care guide says only a Licensed Electrician can replace socket outlets.

The Consumer Product Safety Office (CPSO) says overloading wall socket outlets can cause fire hazards, and suggests considering additional socket outlets if needed. If you plan to add a power point in an HDB flat, read the next section first.

How the new wiring is run in an HDB flat

HDB's renovation guidelines for electrical works do not allow wiring, even in metal or high impact PVC conduit, to be embedded in reinforced concrete slabs, beams, columns, walls, wall plaster or other finishes. Covering wiring with PVC trunking needs no HDB permit.

Under the same HDB guidelines, additional 13A power points need no permit, but SP Services Form CS/5H, endorsed by HDB, must be submitted for testing of the new wiring. Your Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) applies to SP Services for the testing. HDB also says power points should not be installed in bathrooms or toilets.

Only one directory line says non-conceal, and the rest do not say how the wiring is routed. Ask how the new wiring will be run to the point and whether trunking is included in the price. For more on the rules, see electrical work in HDB flats.

Dedicated points for heavy appliances

The CPSO's guide to mains plugs says the 15A 3 round-pin plug (Type M) is generally used by energy-intensive appliances such as air-conditioners. It adds that 15A socket outlets should only be installed by qualified electrical workers.

HDB's electrical works guidelines say a new 15A power point needs an HDB permit in flats provided with a 30A main switch. Flats with a 40A main switch, or upgraded under the Main Upgrading Programme (MUP) or HIP, need no permit.

For water heaters, the CPSO's safety tips say a heater should not be connected to a 3-pin socket outlet. A licensed electrical worker should wire it directly to the mains through a double pole switch.

No directory line prices a 15A point or a heater connection, so ask for a written quote.

Who may do the work

Adding, extending or replacing power points is electrical work that EMA says should be carried out or supervised by an LEW. EMA says electrical work in an HDB flat needs a Licensed Electrician, the class of LEW approved for loads of up to 45kVA. See also which work needs an LEW.

Every LEW carries a licence card with a photograph, name, identity card number and licence number. EMA says to verify the card before any electrical work starts, and you can search for licensed workers on its ELISE portal. See also how to check a licensed electrician.

What changes the price

Several things can move a socket installation price. Ask about each one:

  • New point or replacement. A replacement uses existing wiring; a new point needs a new run.
  • Single or double socket. One printed line is for a double point.
  • Distance from the nearest circuit. The further away, the longer the run.
  • Length of trunking. Ask how much trunking the price covers.
  • Number of points in one visit. Ask whether the price is per point or for the visit.
  • Who supplies the socket. One line reads "Supply and install"; others do not say.
  • Testing. Ask whether testing of the new wiring is included.

What a fair quote should list

Ask for a written quote that lists:

  • the number and type of points, single or double, 13A or 15A
  • how the new wiring will be routed, and whether trunking is included
  • who supplies the socket
  • testing, and the CS/5H submission for it
  • the LEW's name and licence number
  • the start date

Questions

How much does it cost to replace a power socket?

One company in the directory prints "Replace Power Socket" from S$30 per job. In all, 9 companies publish a power point line, and 7 price it per job, from S$28 to S$90 per job, with S$75 in the middle as printed. Ask whether the socket and testing are included.

Is adding a new power point more expensive than replacing one?

It depends on the work. One line in the directory prints "Replace Power Socket" from S$30 per job, and another prints "Additional power socket point" from S$80 per job. A new point needs new wiring, so distance, trunking and testing can affect your quote.

Can a handyman install a power point in an HDB flat?

Not unless the person holds the right licence. EMA says electrical work in an HDB flat needs a Licensed Electrician, the class of LEW approved for loads of up to 45kVA. EMA lists adding or replacing power points as such work, so check the licence card before the job starts.

Do I need a separate point for an aircon or water heater?

The Consumer Product Safety Office says air-conditioners and other energy-intensive appliances generally use the 15A Type M plug, and that 15A sockets should only be installed by qualified electrical workers. Its water heater advice is to wire a heater directly to the mains through a double pole switch, not a 3-pin socket.

Is it safe to use a multi-plug adaptor instead of adding a socket?

EMA warns that overloading power points may lead to overheating and start a fire, and says not to piggy-back plugs with double adaptors. The Consumer Product Safety Office suggests considering additional socket outlets if needed. If you often run short of sockets, ask a Licensed Electrician about adding a point.

What should a power point quote include?

A clear quote lists the number and type of points, how the new wiring is routed and whether trunking is included, and who supplies the socket. It should also cover testing and the CS/5H submission, the LEW's name and licence number, and a start date.
