How are plumbing jobs priced?

Most plumbers price a common repair as a job: one choke cleared, one tap replaced or one toilet bowl fixed. A published figure is usually a starting rate for that job under normal conditions. Some companies add a separate inspection or transport charge, and some fold it into the job price. Read the conditions printed beside each rate before you compare two companies.

A small number of companies price by the visit or by the hour, especially for leak investigation or general repairs. A per-visit charge cannot be compared directly with a per-job rate, because the visit may cover several small jobs or only the assessment. When a company uses a different basis, ask it to restate the price as a total for your job.

Parts are often separate. A tap, mixer, flush valve, cistern or water heater can cost more than the labour to fit it. Ask whether the published rate includes a standard part, whether you can supply your own, and what happens if the fitting you bought does not suit the pipework.

What changes the price of a plumbing job?

The same job name can describe very different work. A choke in a single basin trap is not the same as a blockage deep in a shared pipe, and a dripping tap is not the same as a concealed pipe leak behind tiles. These are the factors that most often move a quote away from the advertised starting rate:

• Where the problem is. Exposed pipes under a sink are quicker to reach than pipes in a wall, under a floor or above a false ceiling.
• How severe it is. A partial blockage may clear with a plunger or a hand tool; a hardened or recurring blockage can need a machine or several attempts.
• The fixture and parts. Mixers, concealed cisterns, wall-hung toilets and storage heaters need more time and more expensive parts than basic fittings.
• Making good. Opening tiles, a ceiling board or a cabinet adds work, and restoring the finish is often quoted separately or left to you.
• Timing. Night, weekend and public holiday visits often cost more, and some companies charge extra for same-day or urgent attendance.
• Access and building rules. Parking, lift booking, renovation hours and management office approval can affect when and how the job is done.

Which jobs are usually the cheapest to fix?

Simple, visible jobs tend to sit at the lower end of the published range: clearing a basin or sink choke, replacing a like-for-like tap, fixing a running cistern or changing a flexible hose. These usually take one visit and use standard parts. Jobs that involve finding a hidden fault, replacing pipework or installing a new appliance tend to sit higher, and the published figure is more likely to be a starting point rather than the final amount.

If you are not sure what the problem is, describe the symptom rather than naming a job. Say which fixture is affected, when it started and whether water is backing up, leaking or not arriving at all. Who pays when the problem is in a shared pipe?

In HDB estates and condominiums, some pipes serve more than one home. A choke in a common discharge stack, a leak from a corridor pipe or water coming through the ceiling from the unit above may not be yours to repair. Before you book a private plumber for a fault that starts outside your home, check with your Town Council, the managing agent or your neighbour. Paying for a visit that ends with "this is a common pipe" is avoidable.

How to compare plumbing quotes

Give each company the same brief: the fixture, the symptom, photos of the pipes and fitting, the property type and when you are available. Ask for the price to be broken into labour, parts and any inspection or transport charge, and ask whether the amount is final or depends on what the plumber finds.

• Check whether the quote includes the part, or only fitting a part you supply.
• Ask what happens if the first method does not clear the choke or stop the leak.
• Confirm whether there is a charge if you decide not to go ahead after the inspection.
• Ask whether the company gives any warranty on the work and the part, and for how long.
• Note whether GST is included where it applies, since many published rates do not say.

A company that explains what it will check first and what could change the price is often easier to work with than one that only repeats a low headline figure. Keep the written quote and the source conditions together so you can compare like with like.

How much does it cost to clear a choked drain in Singapore?

It depends on where the blockage is and how hard it is to clear. The table above shows the lowest, middle and highest choke clearing rates published by plumbing companies on HomezyPro. A simple sink or basin choke is usually priced near the starting rate; a toilet or floor trap choke deep in the pipe can cost more.

Is the published price the final price?

Usually not. Most published plumbing prices are starting rates for a standard job. Parts, access, timing and the actual condition of the pipes can change the total, so ask for a written quote before the work starts.

Why do two plumbers quote very different prices for the same job?

They may be quoting different scopes. One may include the part and a warranty while another quotes labour only, or one may expect a simple choke while another allows for machine clearing. Compare the breakdown, not only the total.
