Four companies publish a furniture assembly line in different units, so there is no overall range. As printed:
- "Furniture assembly, small items (chairs, side tables, simple shelving)": From S$40, printed without a unit.
- "Furniture Assembly": From S$40 per job.
- "Furniture assembly (per piece)": From S$40 per piece.
- "Storage Furniture Assembly": From S$180 per job.
Each figure is one company's published starting rate, not a quote for your job. Compare the companies that offer furniture assembly in the directory.
Per piece, per job or per hour
Handymen price assembly in three main ways. The printed lines use two of them, plus one line with no unit.
Per piece
One line is printed From S$40 per piece. This can suit a few separate items, as long as you know what the company treats as one piece. A wardrobe with drawers may count as more than one, so ask before you book.
Per job
Two lines are printed per job: furniture assembly From S$40 per job and storage furniture assembly From S$180 per job. Ask what one job includes, how many items it covers and whether there is a minimum charge.
Per hour
None of the four lines is printed per hour, so there is no hourly figure to compare. If a handyman offers to work by the hour, ask how long they expect the job to take and what happens if it runs longer. Read more on choosing an hourly rate or fixed price.
No unit printed
The small items line, for chairs, side tables and simple shelving, is From S$40, printed without a unit. Ask whether the figure covers one item, several items or a visit.
Wardrobes, beds and large items
If you are checking IKEA assembly cost for a wardrobe or bed, no line in the directory prices wardrobes or beds by name, so there is no published wardrobe assembly price to quote. The only larger line is storage furniture assembly, printed From S$180 per job, and it does not say which items it covers.
Large items take longer to assemble and may need two people to lift and position. Ask for them to be quoted separately, with the model or size stated.
If the new piece replaces an old one, ask whether the price includes dismantling the old wardrobe or bed and taking it away. None of the published lines prices dismantling or disposal. For other small jobs you could add to the same visit, see the handyman job list.
Wall anchoring and drilling
Tall units such as wardrobes and bookcases are often anchored to the wall. None of the published lines prices wall anchoring, so ask whether it is included or charged separately.
In an HDB flat, the fixings matter. HDB's guidelines for electrical works say power-driven nails and screws must not exceed 6mm in diameter and 40mm in penetration depth. HDB's plumbing guidelines set the same limit for ramsets, nails and screws.
Heavy drilling is noisy work. HDB's renovation rules allow heavy and excessive drilling only from 9am to 5pm on weekdays, and not on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays or the eves of New Year's Day, Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Hari Raya Puasa and Christmas Day. HDB also asks residents to inform neighbours in advance of noisy works. Our guide to HDB drilling rules has more detail.
If you also want a TV fixed to the wall on the same visit, see TV mounting.
What changes the price
Your price depends on the job, not only the starting rate. Ask about:
- Number and size of items: more or larger pieces take more time.
- Item type: small items and storage furniture are priced on different lines.
- Wall anchoring: fixing tall units to the wall adds work.
- Dismantling: taking apart old furniture is extra work.
- Disposal: removing old items or packaging may be charged separately.
- Access and lifts: how easily the boxes can be carried to your unit.
- Minimum charge: a small job may be charged at the company's minimum.
- Same-day timing: whether a same-day visit costs more.

Compare handymenWhat a fair quote should list
Ask for a written quote that lists:
- each item by name and count
- how the company counts pieces
- whether wall anchoring is included
- whether disposal of old items and packaging is included
- any minimum charge
- the start time

Questions
How much does IKEA wardrobe assembly cost?
No company in the directory prices a wardrobe by name, IKEA or otherwise. The only larger published line is storage furniture assembly, printed From S$180 per job, and it does not say which items it covers. Send the company your wardrobe model, its size and whether you want it anchored, then ask for a quote for that model.
Is furniture assembly charged per piece or per hour?
It depends on the company. Of the four published furniture assembly lines in the directory, one is per piece, two are per job and one is printed without a unit. None is printed per hour. Ask how the company counts pieces, whether a minimum charge applies and what the price includes before you agree.
Does the handyman bring tools and anchors?
Ask the company before you book. None of the published furniture assembly lines says whether tools, wall plugs, screws or anchors are included. Tell the company which items need fixing to a wall, ask whether it brings suitable fixings, and check whether any parts it supplies are charged separately.
Can the handyman drill into my HDB wall to anchor a wardrobe?
HDB sets limits that apply. HDB's electrical works guidelines say power-driven nails and screws must not exceed 6mm in diameter and 40mm in penetration depth. HDB's plumbing guidelines ask for precautions when drilling in flats with concealed water pipes. Heavy and excessive drilling is allowed only 9am to 5pm on weekdays under HDB's renovation rules.
Will they take away the boxes and packaging?
Ask the company. None of the published furniture assembly lines says whether clearing boxes and packaging is included, and none prices disposal. If you want packaging or an old item taken away, say so when you ask for a quote, and check whether it is part of the price or charged separately.
Can I assemble the furniture myself and only pay for anchoring?
You can ask. No company in the directory publishes a price for wall anchoring on its own, so ask for a quote and whether a minimum charge applies. If you drill yourself, HDB asks residents to keep DIY works to 7am to 10.30pm, keep noise to a minimum and not drill or hammer from 10.30pm to 7am.
