Home emergency contacts in Singapore: fire, gas and electrical
Each type of emergency has its own emergency hotline in Singapore.
What number do I call for a fire or medical emergency?
The Energy Market Authority (EMA) lists 995 or 999 for life-threatening or medical emergencies only. If a fire or an injury puts someone's life at risk, call one of these numbers straight away. For a power cut or a burst pipe where no one is in danger, use the service hotlines on this page instead.
What should I do if I smell gas?
City Energy's gas safety tips list these steps if you suspect a leak:
- Shut the gas valve at the meter.
- Do not turn any switches or appliances on or off.
- Open windows and doors.
- Do not use a naked flame.
- Call City Energy's 24-hour hotline, 1800 752 1800, from a safe distance.
Who do I call when the power goes off?
EMA says to check on safety and whether the outage affects only your home or your surroundings. For a widespread outage, check SP Group's and EMA's social media for official updates, or call SP Group's Electricity Service Centre on 1800 778 8888. If only your home is affected, read no power in the whole flat.
Water and sanitary emergencies
What should I do first if a pipe bursts?
HDB says to shut the stopcock at the PUB water sub-meter to cut the water supply, then engage a licensed plumber for repairs where necessary. See leak repair for plumbing companies that handle leaks, and emergency plumbing at night if it happens after hours.
When should I call PUB?
PUB's 24-hour call centre is for urgent matters such as major pipe bursts and water interruptions. Call 1800-CALL-PUB (1800 2255 782), which is toll-free from regular land lines; airtime charges apply for mobile calls to 1800 lines. The other number is 6521 6470.
Water is leaking from the flat above. Who do I call?
HDB's ceiling leak guide says to talk to your upstairs neighbour first, agree a time for a check, engage a contractor jointly and split the cost. On the topmost floor, leaks come from the roof, which is common property, so contact your Town Council. Read what to do about a ceiling leak for next steps.
Lifts and common property
What if I am trapped in an HDB lift?
EMA says to call the Essential Maintenance Service Unit (EMSU) if you are trapped in an HDB lift. The number is shown inside and outside lifts in HDB buildings, so you do not need to look it up. For life-threatening or medical emergencies, call 995 or 999.
Who fixes a corridor light, lift or water tank problem?
HDB explains that Town Councils control, manage, maintain and improve the common property of HDB residential flats. Common property includes corridors, void decks, lifts, the water tank, public lighting and open spaces. Report a faulty corridor light, lift or water tank problem to your Town Council.
What about condos?
In a condo, contact your management office or the Management Corporation Strata Title (MCST) about lifts, common areas and shared facilities. EMA suggests keeping your management office's number on your list of emergency contacts. For who handles which repair, see HDB or condo repairs: who to ask.
Getting ready before an emergency
Knowing who to call in a home emergency is easier if you prepare before anything goes wrong. EMA suggests packing a Ready Bag and keeping a list of emergency contacts:
- Battery-operated torchlights, which are safer than candles.
- A portable power source such as batteries, plus charged power banks.
- A battery-operated radio and a first-aid kit. Test the torchlights and radio periodically.
- A list of contacts: the ambulance, your lift's EMSU number and your management office or Town Council.
Also know where your stopcock (at the PUB water sub-meter) and your distribution board (DB box) are.
City Energy says it is advisable to have gas pipes and kitchen appliances checked by a Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW) once every five years.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) advises against overloading electrical outlets and using frayed wires, and says to switch off appliances that are not in use.

Compare plumbersWhere to go next
EMA says a residual current circuit breaker (RCCB), or earth leakage circuit breaker (ELCB), cuts off electricity when it detects a current leakage that may lead to an electric shock. These pages help with what comes next:
- ELCB keeps tripping, if the breaker cuts your power again and again.
- Compare electricians if you need an electrical repair.
- Which service you need, if you are unsure whether to call a plumber, an electrician or a handyman.
Questions
Is 995 or 999 the right number for a fire at home?
EMA gives 995 or 999 for life-threatening or medical emergencies only, and does not split the two numbers by service. A fire at home that puts anyone at risk is a life-threatening emergency, so call 995 or 999. For a power cut or a burst pipe where no one is in danger, use the SP Group or PUB hotline instead.
Can I call City Energy from inside the flat if I smell gas?
City Energy says to call its 24-hour hotline, 1800 752 1800, from a safe distance, so move away from the smell before you make the call. It also says not to turn any switches or appliances on or off while you suspect a gas leak.
Does PUB fix pipes inside my flat?
PUB's 24-hour line, 1800-CALL-PUB (1800 2255 782), is for urgent matters such as major pipe bursts and water interruptions. For a leak inside your flat, HDB says to shut the stopcock at the PUB water sub-meter and engage a licensed plumber for repairs where necessary.
Who do I call if the lights go out in the whole block?
EMA suggests checking whether the outage affects only your home or your surroundings too. If the whole block is dark, check SP Group's and EMA's social media for official updates or call SP Group's Electricity Service Centre on 1800 778 8888. If only the corridor lights are out, HDB lists public lighting as common property, which your Town Council maintains.
Should I switch off the main switch during a flood?
Do not touch any switch, including the main switch, or any appliance with wet hands or while standing in water. EMA says not to use electrical appliances near water or with wet hands, and not to touch an open outlet or switch with wet hands. Keep away and call for help, using 995 or 999 if a life is at risk.
Where should I keep emergency numbers?
EMA suggests keeping a list of emergency contacts, including the ambulance, your lift's EMSU number and your management office or Town Council, and keeping power banks charged. A paper copy at home, for example with your first-aid kit, means you can still read the numbers if your phone battery runs out.
