Published choke clearing rates

For the most common unit (per job), the lowest published choke clearing rates from 22 companies run from S$50 to S$150 per job (middle rate S$80), to clear one choke in a toilet bowl, floor trap or sink. The middle figure is a real published rate, not an average. Each figure is one company's own advertised rate with its conditions, not a quote.

22 companies publish a choke clearing rate. Their lowest published rates run from S$50 to S$150 per job, with S$80 in the middle. The printed scope is clearing one choke in a toilet bowl, floor trap or sink, so the figures cover choke clearing in general rather than toilet bowls alone.

Some lines are for kitchen sinks or floor traps, so read each row's scope before you compare the unchoke toilet cost between companies. For blocked sinks, floor traps and other drains, see our guide to choked drain clearing.

Plunger, auger or bowl removal

Plumbers work through three methods, starting with the simplest. The first two are routine. Removing the bowl is a bigger job, because the bowl has to be taken off, cleared and fixed back in place.

Three ways to clear a choked toilet
MethodWhat it involvesWhen it is used
PlungerPushes and pulls water to loosen the blockageFirst try for soft blockages
AugerA flexible cable breaks up or hooks out the blockageWhen plunging fails
Bowl removalThe bowl comes off so the pipe can be reached directlyWhen an object is stuck or both other methods fail

PUB lists clearing any blockage in a floor trap, water closet (toilet bowl) or sanitary appliance among the simple plumbing works a handyman may do. Installing, changing or relocating a toilet bowl is different: PUB treats it as sanitary plumbing work for a Licensed Plumber. Both points are on PUB's plumbing works page.

If the bowl has to come off or be replaced, ask whether a PUB Licensed Plumber will do the work. You can find one through PUB's online listings, the Singapore Plumbing Society or your Town Council. If the bowl is cracked or old, see toilet repair and replacement.

After-hours and urgent call-outs

Many companies charge more for visits at night, on Sundays and on public holidays. A rate published for a normal visit may not apply outside those hours.

Ask about the after-hours charge on the phone, before anyone sets off, and check whether it replaces the normal rate or is added to it. If you have a second toilet at home, waiting for a daytime visit may be the simpler choice. Our guide to emergency plumbing at night explains what to expect from a late call-out.

When it is the main stack, not your toilet

Sometimes the blockage is not in your toilet at all. The main stack is the shared vertical pipe that your flat and your neighbours' flats drain into. If it is choked, clearing your bowl will not solve the problem.

Signs to look for:

  • Several fittings back up at once, such as the toilet, floor trap and basin.
  • Neighbours on the same stack report the same problem.
  • Water rises in your floor traps instead of draining away.

HDB's guidance on ceiling leaks sets out the principle: for leaks from common property, contact the Town Council. The main stack is a common pipe, and common pipes are a Town Council matter. If you see these signs, call your Town Council before you book a plumber.

What changes the price of a toilet bowl choke

The toilet choke price you are quoted depends on a few practical points:

  • Where the blockage sits. A choke just inside the bowl is quicker to reach than one further along the pipe.
  • What caused it. Paper may clear with a plunger. Wet wipes and sanitary items lodge more firmly, and a toy may mean taking the bowl off. Scale build-up can narrow an older pipe.
  • Access. A cramped bathroom or fittings around the bowl can slow the work.
  • Whether the bowl must come off. This is a bigger job, so ask how it is priced before you agree.
  • Time of day. Night, Sunday and public holiday visits often cost more.

What a fair quote should list

Before work starts, ask for the price and what it covers. A clear quote for a choke job should list these points.

What a choke clearing quote should cover
ItemWhat to check
MethodWhich method the plumber will try first
Call-out or inspection chargeWhether there is one, and whether it is dropped if you go ahead
Clearing priceWhether it covers one choke or the whole visit
If the first method failsWhat happens next, and what that step costs
After-hours chargeWhether a night, Sunday or public holiday rate applies
PaymentWhen you pay, and which payment methods are accepted

For Licensed Plumber work, PUB advises discussing the scope and cost first, asking for itemised quotes and getting at least three quotes, as set out in its guidance on plumbing works. The same habits help with a simple choke job too. Then compare plumbers in the directory to see each company's published rate and its source.

Questions

Can I clear a choked toilet myself?

Often, yes, for a simple blockage. A plunger with a good seal clears many chokes. Stop if the water rises towards the rim, if a solid object went down, or if the choke keeps coming back, and call a plumber.

Does a handyman need a plumbing licence to clear a choke?

No. PUB lists clearing any blockage in a floor trap, water closet (toilet bowl) or sanitary appliance as simple work a handyman may do. Installing, changing or relocating a toilet bowl is work for a Licensed Plumber, as PUB's plumbing works page explains.

Who do I call if the main stack is choked?

Contact your Town Council; it handles common pipes, including the main stack. Signs include several fittings backing up at once, neighbours with the same problem and water rising in your floor traps. Describe what you see and ask how the Town Council will handle it.

Why do some plumbers charge more at night?

After-hours rates are each company's own commercial charge. Many companies charge more at night, on Sundays and on public holidays. The extra amount differs between companies, so ask for it before the plumber sets off and check whether it replaces the normal rate.

What should I not flush down an HDB toilet?

Keep to toilet paper and human waste. Wet wipes, sanitary items and small objects such as children's toys are common causes of chokes. Keep a covered bin in the bathroom for wipes and sanitary items, and stop flushing if something solid goes down.

How do I know if the toilet bowl needs to be removed?

A plumber usually decides after trying a plunger and then an auger. Removal comes up when a solid object is stuck, the auger cannot shift the blockage, or the choke keeps returning. Ask why removal is needed and how it changes the price before you agree.
