What it means when your aircon smells musty, sour or burnt

An aircon smell tells you where to look. Most smells start inside the indoor unit, where cool, damp surfaces collect dust and give mould a place to grow. A few come from nearby drains or from the electrical parts.

Musty or damp

This is the most common complaint. It usually means mould and damp dust on the filter or cooling coil, or water sitting in a dirty drain tray. If you can see dark spots on the louvres or air outlet, read about mould in your aircon.

Sour or vinegar-like

If your aircon smells sour, the cause is often the same damp build-up behind mustiness, such as stagnant water in the drain tray or growth on the coil. If the aircon smells like vinegar again within days of a filter clean, the dirt is deeper than the filters can reach.

Absorbed room or cigarette smells

Daikin Singapore's FAQs say a foul smell is usually room, furniture or cigarette smells that the unit has absorbed and then blows back out. Daikin advises getting a qualified serviceman to service the unit.

Sewage-like

A sewage or drain smell usually points to a drain or floor trap issue rather than the aircon itself. Check where the aircon drain pipe ends and whether a nearby floor trap gives off the same smell.

Burning or electrical

Quick fixes you can do

Most musty smells improve with a basic clean you can do yourself. Switch off the power before you touch the unit. EMA's home electrical safety advice covers the basics, including that every home must have a residual current circuit breaker (RCCB).

  1. Switch off the power. Turn the unit off with the remote, then switch off the isolator next to it.
  2. Wash the filters. Slide the filters out, rinse them under running water and let them dry fully in the shade.
  3. Wipe the louvres. Use a soft, damp cloth on the louvres and the parts of the air outlet you can reach easily.
  4. Dry the unit on fan mode. Refit the filters, power on and run fan mode for a while to dry the coil and drain tray.
  5. Check the drain hose outlet. Make sure the end of the drain hose is clear and not sitting in standing water.
  6. Air the room. Open the windows and doors so stale air and absorbed smells can clear.

If your unit has a filter indicator light, Daikin says it is a reminder to clean the air filter, and you reset it with the filter button on the remote after cleaning.

When the smell needs a professional clean

If the mustiness returns soon after you clean the filters, the mould is usually on the cooling coil or in the drain tray, which you cannot reach safely yourself. This is when a chemical wash is normally suggested. Our guide on chemical wash vs general servicing explains how it differs from a regular service.

38 companies publish a chemical wash rate per indoor unit. Their lowest published rates run from S$50 to S$160 per unit, with S$80 in the middle of the list. That middle figure is one company's own rate as printed. Some lines are "2+ units (price each)" or "From" prices, so read each line as printed and check its linked source.

When you contact a company, ask what its chemical wash includes and whether the drain tray and drain pipe are cleaned.

Keeping the drain tray and outdoor area dry

Still water causes smells and can breed mosquitoes. NEA's dengue prevention advice says not to place trays or containers under the aircon unit or on it. If a tray is needed, NEA says to use HDB's patented air-conditioner tray and check it so the drain point does not choke and hold water. NEA also asks you to keep corridor scupper drains clear and, once a week, clear fallen leaves and stagnant water from them.

Inside the unit, the drain tray collects condensation and drains it away. Daikin notes that skipping regular servicing can clog the cooling coil and lead to water leakage. Daikin also says water dripping from the outdoor condensing unit is normal condensation. If water drips from the indoor unit instead, see our guide on aircon leaking water.

Preventing smells

A smell you have cleared can return if the unit stays damp and dusty. These habits help:

  • Clean the filters regularly. It keeps dust from building up where mould can grow.
  • Run fan mode after cooling. A short spell on fan mode before you switch off helps dry the coil and drain tray.
  • Keep up regular servicing. Daikin says skipping servicing reduces cooling performance. Our guide on how often to service your aircon helps you plan a schedule.
  • Do not leave the unit off for long periods in humid weather. A unit left unused in damp air can turn musty, so run it now and then.

Questions

Why does my aircon smell when I first turn it on?

While the unit is off, damp in the coil and drain tray lets stale smells build up, and the fan blows them out when it starts. Cleaning the filters and running fan mode after use usually helps. If the smell persists, book a service.

Can I spray air freshener into my aircon?

It is better not to. Fragrance only covers the smell, and the mould or damp dust behind it stays on the filter, coil or drain tray. Spraying liquid into the unit also puts it near the electrical parts. Wash the filters and book a chemical wash if the smell returns.

Why does my aircon smell like vinegar?

A sour or vinegar-like smell usually comes from the same damp build-up behind mustiness, such as stagnant water in the drain tray or growth on the coil. Clean the filters and dry the unit on fan mode first. If the smell returns within days, book a chemical wash.

Is a burning smell from the aircon dangerous?

Treat it as a possible electrical fault. Switch the aircon off at the remote and at the isolator, and do not use it until a technician has checked it. Do not open the unit to look for the cause yourself.

Will general servicing remove the smell?

It can help when the smell comes from dusty filters. If mould has built up on the coil or in the drain tray and the mustiness returns soon after a service, a chemical wash is usually the next step. Ask what a service covers before you book.

How do I keep the smell from coming back?

Wash the filters regularly, run fan mode after cooling and keep up regular servicing. Avoid leaving the aircon off for long spells in humid weather, keep the drain hose outlet clear and do not put trays under the unit.
