A weekly cleaning schedule that works
A cleaning schedule that holds up spreads the work out: a few minutes each day so mess does not build up, one area a day for a proper clean, and a short monthly list for jobs that come round less often.
This is practical guidance, not a rule from any agency, so move tasks between days to suit your week. The only fixed intervals on this page come from NEA and HDB.
Daily ten-minute tasks
Ten minutes a day keeps the weekly clean short:
- Wash the dishes and wipe the counters.
- Give the kitchen floor a quick sweep.
- Wipe the bathroom sink and tap.
- Take out the rubbish.
- Every other day, remove water from plant pot plates and change the water in vases.
The last item comes from NEA's mozzie-free checklist, which sets it as an every-other-day task. The same checklist asks you to turn pails over and store them under shelter and cover rarely used gully traps. NEA also says not to place trays or containers under or on an aircon unit, as they can let mosquitoes breed.
Weekly tasks by day
Doing one area a day gives every room a full clean once a week. This is a suggestion, so swap days to suit your plans.
| Day | Area | Tasks |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Bathrooms | Clean from wall to floor and from shower to toilet bowl; remove trapped particles from the floor trap and flush it |
| Tuesday | Kitchen | Wipe cabinets, stove and appliances; clean the sink; keep the floor trap grating closed |
| Wednesday | Bedrooms | Dust surfaces and window ledges; vacuum under the beds |
| Thursday | Living room | Dust shelves; wipe the dining table and chairs; vacuum the sofa |
| Friday | Floors | Vacuum and mop every room; clear fallen leaves and stagnant water in scupper drains |
| Saturday | Laundry and linen | Wash bed sheets, pillowcases and towels |
| Sunday | Light catch-up | Finish anything missed; check the monthly list |
The bathroom order follows NEA's cleaning guidelines for residences: high to low, and from cleaner to dirtier areas. The Friday scupper drain task is NEA's once-a-week anti-dengue item.
The floor trap tasks follow HDB's floor trap tips: keep the grating closed, and remove trapped particles and flush to clear foul smells. HDB also asks you not to pour cooking oil or discard food waste and solid items down the floor trap or sink.
Monthly tasks
These intervals come from official sources.
- Aircon filter. NEA says to check the aircon filter once a month and clean or replace it when necessary.
- Ceiling and wall fans. HDB says to clean them at least once a month and tighten loose screws. Do not use ammonia or bleach-based cleaners on the fan, and never mix bleach with acid-based cleaners or ammonia.
- Roof gutters and apron drains. If your home has them, NEA asks you to clear the leaves in them once a month.
HDB also suggests testing the residual current circuit breaker (RCCB) monthly. The RCCB cuts off electricity in the flat when it detects an earth current leakage.
Following HDB's tips, switch off sensitive equipment such as computers, then press the test button labelled T. The RCCB should switch off; reset it after testing. If it does not switch off, it may be defective, and HDB advises engaging a Licensed Electrician to replace an RCCB that malfunctions.

MOM says it is an offence for a foreign domestic worker to take on part-time work for another household, even with her employer's consent. Under her Work Permit conditions, she does domestic chores only for her employer at the residential address stated on her Work Permit card.
For part-time help, use one of the home cleaning companies instead. MOM lists Household Services Scheme companies, which can hire more migrant workers to provide part-time domestic services such as home cleaning, and says you can contact any of them for part-time or temporary help.

Questions
How often should I clean the bathroom?
Once a week is a practical rhythm for a full clean, with a quick wipe of the sink daily. No official source sets a frequency. On bathroom day, follow NEA's order: wall to floor and shower to toilet bowl. Then remove trapped particles from the floor trap and flush it, as HDB suggests.
How often should I clean the aircon filter?
Check it once a month and clean or replace it when necessary, as NEA advises. NEA also suggests servicing aircon units regularly and having them inspected annually. Keep trays and containers away from under or on the unit, because NEA says they can let mosquitoes breed.
What anti-dengue checks should I add to my cleaning routine?
Add NEA's three timed checks. Every other day, remove water from plant pot plates and change the water in vases. Once a week, clear fallen leaves and stagnant water in scupper drains. Once a month, clear leaves in roof gutters and apron drains, if your home has them.
Can a neighbour's helper clean my flat part-time?
No. MOM says it is an offence for a foreign domestic worker to take on part-time work for another household, even with her employer's consent. For part-time help, use a cleaning company; MOM lists Household Services Scheme companies you can contact.
How much does a part-time cleaner cost per hour?
Published hourly rates run from S$20 to S$24 per hour as printed, across the 9 companies that price part-time cleaning by the hour. S$22 per hour sits in the middle, as one company's own published rate. Others price per visit, per session or per month, some with minimum hours or session counts.
Do home cleaning companies need an NEA licence?
No, not for cleaning private homes. NEA says cleaning businesses that provide domestic cleaning at premises occupied as a private residence do not need to be licensed, though condo common property is not included. Businesses offering non-domestic general cleaning, such as offices or condo common areas, need the licence.
