Published toilet bowl replacement rates

For the most common unit (per job), the lowest published toilet bowl replacement rates from 10 companies run from S$150 to S$420 per job, to replace a whole toilet bowl; some prices include the bowl. Each figure is one company's own advertised rate with its conditions, not a quote.

The table above lists 10 companies that publish a toilet bowl replacement rate. Their lowest published rates run from S$150 to S$420 per job. The two middle rates differ, so there is no single middle rate; each rate is quoted as printed, not an average or a quote for your home.

Scope differs by line, so read each row's wording. Two companies publish labour-only rates, from S$150 per job. Most of the 10 publish a rate to "supply and install toilet bowl set", printed from S$250 per job up to S$420 per job. For other jobs, see plumbing costs in Singapore.

Supply-and-install or labour only

There are two price types, and they are not comparable.

A supply-and-install rate includes a toilet bowl set provided by the plumber, plus the work to fit it. A labour-only rate covers the work but not the bowl, so you buy the bowl yourself. A labour-only figure looks lower because the bowl is missing from it, not because the job is smaller. To compare fairly, compare supply-and-install rates with each other, and labour-only rates with each other.

If you bring your own bowl, the toilet bowl installation cost is only part of what you pay. Ask the plumber what the labour price covers: removing the old bowl, disposing of it, sealing and connecting the new one, and making good the floor around it. Also ask whether they will fit a bowl they did not supply, and send them the model details before you order.

Floor-mounted or wall-hung

A floor-mounted bowl stands on the floor, with its cistern sitting on the bowl or fixed to the wall behind it.

A wall-hung bowl is fixed to the wall with a gap below it. It needs a concealed cistern and a frame hidden behind the wall, so installing one involves more than swapping the bowl. The directory data has no published prices for wall-hung bowls, so this page does not give a figure for one. If you want a wall-hung bowl, ask each plumber for an itemised quote that shows the bowl, the concealed cistern, the frame and any wall work separately.

Why this is Licensed Plumber work

PUB treats installing, changing or relocating a toilet bowl as sanitary plumbing work, which must be done by a PUB Licensed Plumber. Its Plumbing Works page also lists simple works a handyman may do. That list includes replacing a cistern flushing mechanism and clearing a blockage in a toilet bowl. Replacing the bowl itself is not on the list.

For a blocked toilet, see toilet choke clearing cost. For other jobs, see which plumbing jobs need a licensed plumber.

To find one, PUB says homeowners can use its online listings of Licensed Plumbers, the Singapore Plumbing Society or their Town Council. You can also browse licensed plumbers in the directory, then check the licence number on the quote.

Squat to pedestal conversion

One line in the table prices a conversion from a squatting bowl to a sitting bowl, from S$350 per job, as printed. A conversion changes the type of toilet, so read the scope of that line carefully.

Ask whether the price includes the new sitting bowl, removal of the old squat pan and the change to the connection. Also ask about tiling and making good of the floor, which may be priced separately. For other toilet jobs, see toilet repair and replacement.

What changes the toilet bowl replacement price

Several things can change what you pay:

  • Bowl model and brand. In a supply-and-install rate, the bowl set is part of the price, so a different model or brand can change it.
  • Labour only or supply. A labour-only rate leaves out the bowl, so you pay for the bowl separately.
  • Conversion. Changing from a squatting bowl to a sitting bowl is priced as its own job.
  • Floor and tiling work. If the floor or tiles around the bowl need repair or making good, ask whether that is included.
  • Disposal of the old bowl. The directory has no disposal prices, so ask whether removal and disposal are in the rate.
  • Access. Hard-to-reach fittings or a tight space can affect the work, so describe your toilet when you ask.

What a fair quote should list

On its Plumbing Works page, PUB advises discussing scope and cost first, asking for itemised quotes and getting at least three quotes. PUB also charges no fee for the submissions a Licensed Plumber lodges, so any such fee on a quote is the plumber's own charge. A clear quote for a toilet bowl replacement should list:

  • The bowl model and brand, or a note that you supply the bowl
  • Labour for removing the old bowl and fitting the new one
  • Removal and disposal of the old bowl
  • Sealing and connection of the new bowl
  • Making good of the floor and tiles around the bowl
  • The plumber's PUB licence number
  • Warranty terms, as stated by the company
  • Payment terms, including any deposit

Questions

Can a handyman replace a toilet bowl?

No. PUB treats installing or changing a toilet bowl as sanitary plumbing work for a Licensed Plumber. A handyman may do some simple works on PUB's list, such as replacing a cistern flushing mechanism or clearing a blockage in a toilet bowl, but replacing the bowl itself is not on that list.

Does the price include the new toilet bowl?

It depends on the line. Of the 10 companies that publish a rate, most price a supply-and-install toilet bowl set, so the bowl is included. Two publish labour-only rates, from S$150 per job, which leave the bowl out. Read the scope of each line in the table and ask which bowl model the price covers.

Can I buy my own toilet bowl and pay only for installation?

Some plumbers offer this. Two of the 10 companies publish labour-only rates, from S$150 per job. Before you buy, ask the plumber whether they will fit a bowl you supply and what the labour covers, including removal and disposal of the old bowl, sealing, connection and making good.

How long does a toilet bowl replacement take?

The directory data does not give a duration, so ask the plumber when you get a quote. A like-for-like swap and a squat to pedestal conversion with floor work are different jobs. Describe your toilet clearly and ask how long they expect your job to take.

Is it worth repairing the cistern instead of replacing the bowl?

If the bowl is sound and the problem is in the cistern, a repair may be enough. HDB's toilet care guide suggests fixes for overflow or slow filling, such as adjusting the water level screw or replacing a damaged ball float or worn washer. It says to engage a plumber if your flushing system differs from its illustrations.

Who takes away the old toilet bowl?

The directory data has no figures for disposal. Ask each plumber whether removing and disposing of the old bowl is included in their price, and make sure the quote states it in writing before the work starts.
