Service aircon yourself: what is safe

Daikin Singapore's guide to cleaning your air-con by yourself keeps the owner's part short. Clean the filter every two weeks: open the front grille, take out the filter, wash it gently with mild soap and lukewarm water, rinse it, let it dry completely and put it back. Wipe the front panel with a clean cloth, and do not use any cleaning agent other than mild soap. The outside of the unit can be cleaned with water and left to dry.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) gives a simpler rule in its energy saving tips: check the aircon filter once a month and clean or replace it when necessary. The two fit together. Wash the filter as often as your own model's manual says, and make the monthly check a habit so a clogged filter does not go unnoticed for long.

If your question is "Can I clean aircon myself?", the answer is yes for the filters, the front panel and the outside of the casing. Everything else sits behind those parts and is covered in the next section. For a fuller walkthrough, see how to clean an aircon filter.

What to leave to a technician

Daikin's cleaning guide stops at the filter, front panel and casing, and points owners to its professional servicing for anything beyond that. In practice, a full service, a chemical wash and any work inside the unit are jobs for a technician.

Refrigerant needs particular care. NEA's page on refrigerants says that, to comply with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) requirements on handling R32 aircon systems, manufacturers must ensure service personnel have completed Institute of Technical Education (ITE) training courses. ITE runs a Certificate of Competency in Residential Air-Conditioning System (Refrigerant) course, and NEA publishes a list of technicians who have completed it.

The outdoor condensing unit needs extra care. HDB's home care guide on air-conditioners asks owners to have it serviced regularly by a licensed service provider, and to ask whether its brackets need replacing because of rust and corrosion. HDB warns that an improperly installed or maintained aircon can fall and cause serious injury or death to people below. HDB also says only Building and Construction Authority (BCA) trained air-conditioner installers may install or replace condensing units.

To plan visits through the year, see how often to service an aircon.

No cleaning sprays inside

One shortcut to skip in DIY aircon cleaning is a cleaning spray. Daikin's global troubleshooting page says not to use a commercial cleaning spray inside the aircon. It may damage resin parts of the heat exchanger and other internal components, and in the worst case cause water leaks.

The same goes for household cleaners. Daikin Singapore's cleaning guide allows nothing stronger than mild soap, even on the front panel, and none of its steps calls for a spray or a stronger product.

If the coil or blower looks dirty, or the unit smells musty, ask a technician whether an aircon chemical wash is needed. That way the inside is cleaned by someone who can take the unit apart and put it back correctly.

Professional servicing and what it costs

NEA's energy saving tips advise servicing aircon units regularly and having them inspected annually. Cleaning the filters at home helps between those visits, but it does not replace them.

66 companies publish a general servicing rate for one indoor unit. Their lowest published rates run from S$15 to S$90, with S$40 in the middle. The two middle companies both publish S$40, so that figure is a real published rate, not a calculation.

Read each line as printed. Many are "From" prices, and some are multi-unit prices (price each) that apply only when you book a minimum number of units. Do not multiply a rate by your number of units to work out a total; ask each company for a written quote for your home instead.

For more on how rates are set out, see aircon servicing prices, and read preparing your home for aircon servicing before the visit.

A simple routine

Keep upkeep in two layers: what you do, and what a technician does.

  • Filters: wash them as your manual says. Daikin's cleaning guide says every two weeks.
  • Monthly check: look at the filters once a month, as NEA suggests.
  • Professional servicing: book it regularly, with an annual inspection, and leave the outdoor unit to the technician.
  • Call a technician: for water leaks, burnt or unusual smells, abnormal noise, or weak cooling that continues after you check the settings and filters.

For weak cooling, Daikin's troubleshooting page lists the checks: the temperature and mode set on the remote, the air quantity and direction, clean filters, nothing blocking the units, and windows and doors closed. When you need help, compare aircon servicing companies.

Questions

Can I wash the aircon coil with a hose?

No. Daikin Singapore's cleaning guide limits owner cleaning to the filter, the front panel and the outside of the unit. Daikin's troubleshooting page warns against using a commercial cleaning spray inside the aircon, because it may damage internal parts and cause water leaks. If the coil looks dirty, ask a technician.

Will cleaning the filter myself void the warranty?

For Daikin owners, filter cleaning is expected maintenance: Daikin's own cleaning guide tells owners to wash the filter every two weeks. For other brands, check your own brand's warranty terms and manual. Either way, keep to the filter, front panel and casing, and leave the inside of the unit to a technician.

Can I recharge the refrigerant with a DIY kit?

No. Refrigerant work is for trained technicians. NEA's refrigerant page says manufacturers must ensure service personnel have completed ITE training courses, to comply with SCDF's requirements on handling R32 aircon systems. NEA also publishes a list of technicians who have completed ITE's refrigerant course, so ask your servicing company about its technicians' training.

How often should a technician service my aircon?

Regularly, with an annual inspection. That is the advice in NEA's energy saving tips. HDB's home care guide also asks owners to have the outdoor condensing unit serviced regularly by a licensed service provider. Between visits, check the filters monthly and wash them as often as your own model's manual says.

Is it safe to clean the outdoor unit myself?

No. HDB's home care guide asks owners to have the condensing unit serviced regularly by a licensed service provider, and warns that an improperly installed or maintained aircon can fall and cause serious injury or death to people below. Never lean out of a window or onto the ledge to reach it; leave the outdoor unit to your technician.

Can I use a vacuum on the filter?

Yes. Daikin's global troubleshooting page says air filters can be cleaned with water or a vacuum cleaner, and recommends cleaning them every 2 weeks. Switch the aircon off first and take the filter out before you clean it. Because the page is global guidance, check your own model's manual too.
