Aircon problem after servicing: first steps

A fault that starts right after a service visit is easier to sort out if you act quickly and keep a record. Before you call anyone:

  • Switch the aircon off with the remote if water drips from the indoor unit, there is a burning smell or you see sparks.
  • Take photos and a short video of the leak, the noise or the display, so the company can see what you see.
  • Note the date of the visit, which units were serviced and what the technician said was done.
  • Contact the company in writing, by message or email, so there is a record of when you reported it.

To see what the visit should have covered, compare the work done with an aircon servicing checklist. Gaps between the checklist and what you were told are worth raising when you contact the company.

Leaking, noise or not cold

Daikin's air conditioner troubleshooting page gives steps for each of these problems. It is a global page, so follow your own model's manual too.

Water leaking indoors

With an aircon leaking after servicing, Daikin says to stop using the aircon, collect the water in a bucket or with a floor cloth, and check whether water comes out of the drain hose outside. Tell the servicing company what you found when you report it. The aircon leaking water page covers leaks in more detail.

A new noise

For an aircon noisy after servicing, Daikin's advice on abnormal noise from the indoor unit is to stop operation and contact the place of purchase. If the noise began after the visit, also ask the servicing company whether a filter or panel may not have been refitted properly.

Weak cooling

If the room does not cool well, Daikin suggests checking the temperature and mode set on the remote, the air quantity and direction, whether the filters are clean, whether anything blocks the units, and that windows and doors are closed. If all of that looks right, ask the company to come back. The guide on aircon not cold has more checks.

What to ask the servicing company

When you contact the company, ask specific questions and keep the answers in writing:

  • What exactly was done on each unit, and were any parts replaced?
  • Does it give a workmanship warranty after servicing, and for how long?
  • Is a return visit to check its own work free?
  • When can a technician come back?

Ask about parts because they can affect your product warranty. Daikin's warranty terms say its warranty does not cover general servicing, and that it becomes void for, among other things, improper maintenance or the use of non-genuine parts. These are one brand's terms, so check your own brand's warranty card.

To compare what you paid with published rates: 66 companies publish a general servicing rate for one indoor unit. Their lowest published rates run from S$15 to S$90 as printed, with S$40 in the middle. Many are "From" prices, and some apply only with a minimum number of units, so read each line's conditions.

If the company will not help

The Lemon Law is not the route for a poor service. CASE explains that the Lemon Law covers goods that do not conform to the contract, with remedies such as repair, replacement, a price reduction or rescission. CASE says it does not apply to services.

For complaints, CASE is the first point of contact for local consumers. The Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) says that under the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act (CPFTA), CASE helps consumers obtain redress, and in some cases compensation, through negotiation and/or mediation. CCCS takes enforcement action against suppliers who persist in unfair practices; it does not assist individual consumers with redress.

Bring your photos, video, receipt and messages to any complaint. If that does not settle it, the guide to a dispute with a contractor explains the Small Claims Tribunals and how to prepare.

Avoiding it next time

A few habits make the next service easier to check:

  • Get the scope in writing: which units, what is cleaned and whether the price is per unit.
  • Be home for the visit so you can see what is done.
  • Test each unit before the technician leaves: cooling, noise and drips.
  • Keep the receipt and the company's messages.

When you book, how to compare quotes shows what to line up between companies. If a fault is not linked to the service, look at aircon repair instead.

Questions

Is it normal for an aircon to drip after servicing?

No, not from the indoor unit. If water leaks from the indoor unit, Daikin says to stop using the aircon, collect the water in a bucket or with a floor cloth, and check whether water comes out of the drain hose outside. Then ask the servicing company to come back and check its work.

Does the Lemon Law cover a bad aircon service?

No. CASE says the Lemon Law covers goods that do not conform to the contract and does not apply to services. If a service goes wrong, raise it with the company first, in writing. If the company will not help, CASE is the first point of contact for local consumers' complaints.

Should I call a different company to check?

Not at first. Ask the original company to return and check its own work. If another company works on the unit first, it can be harder to show what went wrong during the service. Keep your photos, video and messages, and bring in another company only if the original one refuses or stops replying.

Can servicing void my aircon warranty?

Yes, under Daikin's terms, if the unit is not properly maintained or non-genuine parts are used. Daikin's warranty terms also say its warranty does not cover general servicing. Other brands set their own terms, so check your warranty card and ask the servicing company which parts, if any, it replaced.

Who can help if the company refuses to return?

CASE can. CCCS says CASE is the first point of contact for local consumers' complaints and helps consumers obtain redress, and in some cases compensation, through negotiation and/or mediation. CCCS does not assist individual consumers with redress. Have your photos, receipt and messages ready when you contact CASE.

Should I pay before testing the aircon?

No. Test each unit before the technician leaves, then pay. Run every serviced unit for a few minutes, check that the air feels cold, listen for new noises and look for drips under the indoor unit. If something is wrong, ask the technician to fix it before leaving.
