Per job or no unit
Some rates are printed per job, and some are printed without a unit. Ask how many units a per-job price covers, and ask what a figure printed without a unit refers to.

GST and the final price
Not all businesses are registered for GST, and only GST-registered businesses may charge it. The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) says prices displayed by GST-registered businesses should be the final, GST-inclusive prices; they may not display, quote, advertise or publish prices without GST. If both are shown, the GST-inclusive price must be at least as prominent. IRAS also has an e-Service to check whether a business is GST-registered (IRAS: buying from a GST-registered business).
Ask whether the price you were quoted is the final price you will pay.
How to compare quotes like for like
Two quotes are only comparable if they describe the same job. Check these points:
- The same number of units and the same unit types.
- General servicing or chemical wash.
- Whether the rate needs a minimum number of units.
- What is included, such as the filter, coil and drain pipe.
- Whether GST is included.
- Any transport charge.

A lower price should not mean servicing less often. The National Environment Agency (NEA) advises checking the aircon filter once a month and cleaning or replacing it when necessary, servicing aircon units regularly and getting them inspected annually (NEA: energy saving tips for households).
HDB advises having the condensing unit serviced regularly by a licensed service provider, and asking whether its brackets need replacing because of rust and corrosion. Brackets should be stainless steel, free of corrosion and rust, and fixed to concrete or brick walls, not timber frames. Only Building and Construction Authority (BCA) trained air-conditioner installers may install or replace condensing units (HDB: maintaining air-conditioners in HDB flats).
