Side-by-side comparison

The main differences are what holds the bowl up, where the cistern sits and how a plumber reaches it.

On a wall-hung toilet, only the bowl and the flush plate are on show; the frame, cistern and pipes sit behind a false wall. A floor-mounted bowl keeps its cistern in view, so its parts can be reached directly. With either type, ask your plumber how the new bowl will connect to the existing discharge pipe.

Should you choose a wall hung toilet or a floor-mounted bowl?

Decide with your plumber, looking at four things before you pick a model.

  • Space. A wall-hung bowl needs room behind it for a frame and a false wall. Ask how much depth the frame will take in your bathroom.
  • Access. On a wall-hung toilet, the cistern and its valves sit behind the wall and are reached through the flush plate. A floor-mounted bowl keeps its parts in view for a toilet repair.
  • Pipes. Ask your licensed plumber whether the existing discharge pipe suits a frame, and where the new bowl would connect.
  • Budget. A wall-hung set adds a frame and a false wall to the bowl, so ask for each item to be priced separately.

Concealed cistern access

GROHE explains that a wall-hung toilet is carried by a frame behind the wall, which keeps the cistern, drain and pipes hidden and is operated by a flush plate. GROHE lists a direct access door for servicing on one of its models. That is a feature of GROHE's own frames, not a rule for every brand.

Geberit says removing the flush plate on its concealed cisterns gives direct access to the cistern components. Geberit also says it keeps spare parts for its concealed cisterns available for 50 years, excluding some electronic components. That is Geberit's own policy.

Where service ducts or piping (not gas pipes) are enclosed with lightweight non-combustible materials, HDB says to provide a removable access opening of at least 600mm x 600mm for inspection and maintenance. If a total replacement is needed, the enclosure has to be removed. Ask your contractor whether this applies to your false wall.

Before you choose, ask how the cistern valves are reached for repairs and which brand's parts are used. For repair prices, see the toilet cistern repair cost guide.

HDB suitability

HDB's plumbing guidelines say installing, fixing, replacing or removing a toilet pan, and sealing the discharge pipe, must be done by a PUB Licensed Plumber. These works do not need an HDB permit, but they are subject to HDB's technical terms and conditions. PUB says regulated water service and sanitary plumbing works must be carried out by Licensed Plumbers, and a handyman without a licence may do only the simple plumbing works it lists. Toilet pan work is not on that list.

The same HDB page sets these rules:

  • Vent pipes. When you replace a squat pan with a squat pan, or a pedestal pan with a pedestal pan, removal of vent pipes is not allowed.
  • Floor slab. When you change between squat and pedestal pans, holes cannot be hacked in the existing floor slab, and HDB's addition and alteration (A&A) guidelines apply.
  • Fixings. Ramsets, nails and screws must not exceed 6mm in diameter and 40mm penetration depth.

HDB also says toilet floor and wall finishes provided by HDB or the developer must not be replaced for 3 years from the completion date of the block, because of the waterproofing membrane laid under them. New floor finishes may be laid over the existing ones.

For a wall hung toilet bowl, HDB gives no separate listing: its toilet pan rules name pedestal and squat pans only. Ask your plumber and contractor how the frame will be fixed within these rules before you buy. The HDB plumbing renovation rules guide covers the wider picture.

Cleaning and cost

A wall-hung bowl leaves the floor under it clear. A floor-mounted bowl stands on the floor.

10 companies publish a toilet bowl replacement line, all per job: their published rates run from S$150 to S$420 per job, as printed. These lines are to replace a whole toilet bowl, and some prices include the bowl. They do not price a concealed frame or a false wall, so ask for a separate itemised quote if you choose a wall-hung toilet. The toilet bowl replacement cost guide explains the published lines.

Compare plumbers

Which one should you choose?

There is no single winner. A wall-hung toilet suits you if you want a clear floor under the bowl and accept a frame, a false wall and an access panel. A floor-mounted bowl suits you if you want simpler access to the cistern and a simpler replacement later. Either way, compare plumbers and ask each one for an itemised quote.

Questions

Can I install a wall-hung toilet in an HDB flat?

HDB does not list wall-hung pans separately, so confirm the design with your plumber and contractor. HDB sets rules for toilet pans: a PUB Licensed Plumber does the work, removal of vent pipes is not allowed when a pan is replaced with the same type, and holes cannot be hacked in the floor slab when you change pan type.

How do you repair a concealed cistern?

A plumber removes the flush plate to reach the parts behind it. Geberit says removing the flush plate on its concealed cisterns gives direct access to the cistern components. Ask which brand and model is fitted before parts are ordered.

Who may install a toilet pan in an HDB flat?

A PUB Licensed Plumber. HDB says installing, fixing, replacing or removing a toilet pan, and sealing the discharge pipe, must be done by a PUB Licensed Plumber. PUB's list of simple plumbing works, the only plumbing a handyman without a licence may do, does not include toilet pan work.

Is a wall-hung toilet strong enough?

GROHE says its powder-coated steel frames are TUV-approved to support up to 400 kg. That is GROHE's claim for its own frames, not a rating for every wall-hung toilet. Other frames have their own ratings, so ask your plumber or supplier for the rating of the frame you are buying.

Can I remove the vent pipe to fit a new toilet?

No. HDB says removal of vent pipes is not allowed when you replace a squat pan with a squat pan or a pedestal pan with a pedestal pan. Installing, fixing, altering, replacing or removing a ventilating pipe or stack must be done by a PUB Licensed Plumber.

Does the toilet replacement rate include a concealed frame?

No. The published rates on this page are toilet bowl replacement lines only: 10 companies publish one, from S$150 to S$420 per job, as printed. They do not price a concealed frame or a false wall, so ask for a separate itemised quote.
