Published toilet repair rates

For the most common unit (per job), the lowest published toilet repair rates from 11 companies run from S$80 to S$150 per job (middle rate S$90), for one toilet part such as the siphon, valve or flush system. The middle figure is a real published rate, not an average. Each figure is one company's own advertised rate with its conditions, not a quote.

In total, 11 companies publish a toilet repair line, all per job. Their published rates run from S$80 to S$150 per job, with S$90 in the middle. That middle figure is one company's own published rate, not a quote for your toilet.

The scope as printed is one toilet part, such as the siphon, valve or flush system, so check which part each line names before you compare.

Siphon, inlet valve and flush button

A cistern is the tank that holds the water for each flush. Three parts do most of the work:

  • Inlet valve. Lets water in after a flush and shuts off when the tank is full.
  • Siphon. Releases the stored water into the bowl.
  • Flush button or lever. Starts the flush.

Several siphon replacement lines read "From S$80" per job. A WC flush cistern replacement line is printed at S$80 per job, and a valve line starts from S$90 per job. One line covers a shower set or WC flush system at S$135 per job. Other lines read From S$100, From S$130 and, in two cases, From S$150, all per job. If siphon replacement cost is your question, compare the siphon lines with each other.

HDB's home care guide for toilets covers cistern problems such as overflow and slow filling. Its suggested fixes are to adjust the water level screw, or replace a damaged ball float or a worn washer. HDB advises engaging a plumber if your flushing system is different from the ones in its illustrations.

Concealed cisterns and access

A concealed cistern sits behind a wall or panel, with only the flush plate or button on show. The plumber has to reach the parts through it first, and that access may add work.

None of the 11 published toilet repair lines prices concealed cistern or access panel work, so there is no directory figure to compare. When you ask for a quote, say the cistern is concealed and ask:

  • Whether opening the panel or wall is included.
  • Whether making good (closing and finishing it afterwards) is included.

Who can do a toilet cistern repair

Under PUB's rules on plumbing works, regulated water service and sanitary plumbing works must be done by a PUB Licensed Plumber, except for listed simple plumbing works that a handyman may do. These include replacing a cistern flushing mechanism and clearing any blockage in a floor trap, water closet (toilet bowl) or sanitary appliance. Engaging a plumber who is not licensed for regulated works has been an offence since 2018.

The toilet bowl itself is different. PUB treats installing, changing or relocating toilet bowls and the sanitary piping system as sanitary plumbing work for a Licensed Plumber. HDB's renovation guidelines say the same for toilet pans: installing, fixing, replacing or removing a toilet pan, and sealing the discharge pipe, must be done by a PUB Licensed Plumber.

If the job goes beyond the flushing mechanism, look for licensed plumbers and ask who will do the work. See also which jobs need a licensed plumber.

Repair the cistern or replace the bowl

When one part fails, such as the siphon, the inlet valve or the flush button, a replacement of that part is usually what is quoted, which matches the one-part scope of the published lines.

A cracked bowl or a full toilet replacement is a different, licensed job with its own guide: toilet bowl replacement cost. A blocked toilet is a separate job again, covered in toilet choke clearing cost.

If you replace the cistern itself, check the water efficiency label. PUB's Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme rates products with ticks and covers dual-flush low-capacity flushing cisterns and WC flush valves, among other products. Products advertised, offered for sale or displayed must show the label prominently, and the registration number is on the mandatory label.

What changes the price

Several things decide what a toilet flush repair costs:

  • Which part. The lines name a siphon, a valve, a flush cistern or a flush system, and the printed figures differ.
  • Exposed or concealed cistern. No line prices concealed cistern access, so ask how the plumber will reach the parts and whether that is quoted.
  • Who supplies the part. Ask whether the per job rate includes the part, and whether you may supply your own.
  • Brand availability. Ask whether a part that fits your cistern brand is available.
  • More than one toilet. Ask whether several toilets can be done in one visit and how each is priced.

What a fair quote should list

Ask for a quote that shows each item separately:

  • The part and its brand.
  • Labour.
  • Whether the part is included in the per job price.
  • Access and making good, if the cistern is concealed.
  • Testing for leaks after the repair.

PUB advises discussing the scope and cost with the plumber first, asking for itemised quotes and getting at least three quotes.

Questions

How much does it cost to replace a toilet siphon?

11 companies in the directory publish a toilet repair line, all per job. Several of the siphon replacement lines read "From S$80" per job, as printed. A "From" price is where the rate starts, so ask whether the siphon part is included and what the full price is for your cistern.

Can a handyman fix a toilet cistern?

For the flushing mechanism, yes. PUB's plumbing works page lists replacing a cistern flushing mechanism among the simple works a handyman may do. Installing, changing or relocating a toilet bowl, or work on the sanitary piping system, is for a PUB Licensed Plumber. If the job goes further, ask who will do it.

Why can a concealed cistern repair cost more?

A concealed cistern sits behind a wall or panel, so the plumber has to reach the parts first. That access may add work, and no published toilet repair line prices it. When you ask for a quote, say the cistern is concealed and ask whether access and making good are included.

Should I repair the cistern or replace the toilet bowl?

If one part has failed, such as the siphon, inlet valve or flush button, a repair of that part is usually what is quoted. A cracked bowl or a full toilet replacement is a different job: installing, changing or relocating toilet bowls is work for a PUB Licensed Plumber, so ask for a separate quote.

How do I know if my cistern is leaking?

Look for water streaks running into the bowl, a ripple in the bowl water, running water at night when nothing is in use, or unusually high water bills. PUB also offers households leak detection tablets for flushing cisterns. If you find a leak, PUB advises calling a licensed plumber to fix or replace the cistern.

What should a toilet repair quote include?

Ask for the part and its brand, the labour, and whether the part is included in the per job rate. For a concealed cistern, ask whether access and making good are covered, and check that leak testing after the repair is listed. PUB advises asking for itemised quotes and getting at least three quotes.
