Before you start your spring cleaning checklist
Plan by room. Walk through the home, list each room and the jobs it needs, and spread the rooms over several days if you need to.
Declutter first. Sort things to keep, donate and throw away, and take the bags out before you clean, so there is less to move.
Gather your supplies in one bucket:
- Microfibre cloths, a soft brush and an old toothbrush
- A vacuum with a crevice tool
- A mop, a bucket and a squeegee
- Mild detergent, a degreaser and a mould cleaner
- Gloves, rubbish bags and a sturdy step stool
Work top to bottom and dry to wet: dust fans, lights and high shelves, wipe surfaces, vacuum, and mop last. For the weekly and monthly jobs between spring cleans, use our home cleaning checklist.
Kitchen
The kitchen collects the most grease, so give it the most time.
- Hood and filters: soak the grease filters in hot water with degreaser, scrub them and wipe the hood and wall behind the hob.
- Oven: soak the racks and trays, clean the inside and wipe the door seal.
- Fridge: throw out expired food, wash the shelves and drawers, and wipe the door seals.
- Cabinet insides: empty one at a time, wipe the shelves and check dry goods for expiry dates and pests.
- Sink and trap: clear the strainer, flush the trap with hot water and scrub around the tap.
- Floor: move the bin and anything on wheels, sweep under it and mop last.
Black or peeling sealant along the counter will not clean up, but a handyman can replace it.
Bathrooms
Bathrooms stay damp, so mould is the main thing to look for. Keep the window open or the exhaust fan running while you work.
- Grout and mould: scrub the grout lines with a toothbrush and treat dark spots with a mould cleaner. Use one product at a time and never mix them.
- Exhaust fan: switch it off, remove and wash the cover, and wipe the blades.
- Floor trap: lift the cover, pull out hair and soap scum, and flush with water.
- Shower screen: remove water marks and soap film, then squeegee the glass dry.
- Cabinets: clear out expired products and check under the basin for leaks.
If mould keeps coming back, more scrubbing may not fix it. You can compare home cleaning companies for a professional clean, or ask a handyman about regrouting.
Bedrooms and living room
Dust collects in fabric and on surfaces you rarely reach, so start high and work down.
- Fans and lights: wipe each fan blade with a damp cloth and clean the light covers.
- Aircon filters: slide them out, rinse them with lukewarm water and let them dry fully in the shade.
- Mattress: vacuum both sides and rotate it if the label allows.
- Curtains: wash or vacuum them according to the care label.
- Sofa: vacuum under the cushions and along the seams.
- Behind furniture: move the bed, sofa and cabinets where you can, then vacuum and mop.
- Windows and grilles: clean the tracks, the grilles and the glass you can reach safely from inside.
For keeping fabric fresh between spring cleans, see our guide to sofa and curtain care.
Outside the flat and mosquito checks
A house cleaning checklist in Singapore should end with checks for stagnant water. The National Environment Agency (NEA) sets out a mozzie-free checklist on its dengue prevention page: turn pails over and store them under shelter, loosen hardened soil in potted plants, keep corridor scupper drains clear, cover gully traps you rarely use, and cover bamboo pole holders after use.
NEA also gives a routine worth keeping after the spring clean:
- Every other day: remove water from plant pot plates, and change the water in vases, scrubbing the insides.
- Once a week: clear fallen leaves and stagnant water from scupper drains, and stagnant water from any air cooler.
- Once a month: clear leaves from roof gutters and apron drains, if your home has them.
NEA says not to place trays or containers under an aircon unit or on it, as they can let mosquitoes breed. If you need a tray, NEA points to HDB's patented air-conditioner tray, which you should check so the drain point does not choke and hold water.
Jobs to leave to professionals
Some jobs need equipment, access or training that most households do not have:
- Aircon chemical wash: rinsing filters is a DIY job, but a chemical wash of the coil and inner parts is work for an aircon technician.
- High windows: clean only the glass you can reach from inside.
- Mattress or sofa shampoo: soaked fabric that is not dried properly stays damp inside, so leave this to a company with extraction equipment.

Questions
How long does spring cleaning take?
It depends on the size of the home, how much you declutter first and how many people help. Doing it yourself, spread a room-by-room clean over a weekend or several days. Some companies price their smallest deep cleaning package by time, such as 1 cleaner for 4 hours.
What is the difference between spring cleaning and deep cleaning?
Spring cleaning is an occasional, room-by-room clean of the whole home that goes beyond your usual routine. Deep cleaning is the term cleaning companies often use for a detailed one-off service of this kind. HomezyPro lists deep and spring cleaning rates together.
Should I spring clean before Chinese New Year?
Many households like to clean before Chinese New Year, and it is a natural time for this checklist, though any time works. If you want a professional for that period, contact companies early and confirm the date and scope before you pay.
Which jobs should I leave to professionals?
Leave an aircon chemical wash, high windows you cannot reach safely from inside, and mattress or sofa shampooing to professionals. These jobs need equipment, access or training. You can still rinse aircon filters, clean the glass you can reach, and vacuum your mattress and sofa yourself.
How do I stop mosquitoes breeding at home?
Remove stagnant water. NEA's checklist asks you to turn pails over and store them under shelter, empty plant pot plates every other day, keep scupper drains clear, cover bamboo pole holders after use, and not place trays or containers under an aircon unit or on it.
How often should I spring clean?
There is no fixed rule. Many households do a full room-by-room clean once or twice a year, with lighter weekly and monthly cleaning in between. Mosquito checks are a frequent job, not a yearly one, so keep them in your regular routine.
