22 companies publish a choke clearing rate, from S$50 to S$150 per job, with S$80 in the middle. With 22 companies, both middle rates are S$80, so S$80 is a real published rate. As printed, each rate is to clear one choke in a toilet bowl, floor trap or sink.

The table shows each company's lowest choke line, so it mixes toilet bowl, floor trap and sink chokes. 5 of the 22 lines in the table name a floor trap, at S$50 to S$60 per job: "Floor-trap Choke Cleaning" at S$50 per job and four "Clear clogged floor trap" lines at S$60 per job, two of them printed "From S$60". That does not mean only 5 companies clear floor traps.

The rest are toilet bowl or sink lines, including sink or basin lines at From S$50 and From S$150 per job. One line says complex jobs with grease traps cost more: "From S$80 to S$150 per job". For toilet bowls, see the toilet choke clearing cost guide.

Hair, soap and solid waste

With a bathroom floor trap blocked, water can overflow instead of draining. HDB's floor trap guide says this comes from solid matter or grease: remove the solid materials, and for serious cases engage a licensed plumber. For foul smells, HDB says to remove trapped particles and flush.

In practice, lift the grating, pick out the waste caught in and under it, and run water to check that it drains. If water still sits or rises again, or the choke is out of reach, call a licensed plumber or a handyman who clears floor traps.

Your trap or the main pipe?

HDB's pipes guide says you maintain the sanitary branch pipes in your flat, and the Town Council is responsible for maintaining the main sanitary pipes. HDB adds that slow or no discharge of wastewater can come from wear and tear or a choke in the floor trap from solid waste building up.

HDB's page on Town Councils says Town Councils maintain the common property of HDB flats, such as corridors, lifts and the water tank, and that you contact your Town Council about routine maintenance. See also who maintains what in an HDB flat.

Who can clear it

PUB's simple plumbing works list sets out what a handyman may do without a PUB licence. For floor traps, it includes clearing any blockage in any floor trap, water closet or sanitary appliance; clearing and flushing any discharge pipe, drain-line, floor trap or grease trap carrying used water from a sanitary appliance to the sewerage system; and replacing any floor trap grating or cover.

Other regulated plumbing work, such as repairing or replacing water pipes the list does not name or installing, changing or relocating a toilet bowl, must be done by a PUB Licensed Plumber. Since 2018 it has been an offence to engage a plumber not licensed by PUB for regulated works. See what needs a licensed plumber.

So a handyman or a licensed plumber can clear a blocked floor trap. To compare who offers it, see choked drain clearing.

What changes the price

Only three things in the table move the figure:

  • Type of choke. The 5 floor trap lines sit at the low end, S$50 to S$60 per job. One line says complex jobs with grease traps cost more.
  • "From" prices. Several lines, including two floor trap lines, start with "From", so ask what would take your job above that figure.
  • The unit. Every line is per job, not per hour, and as printed a job clears one choke.

No line prices a choke in the common stack, a burst or cracked pipe, or a floor trap replacement, so get those priced separately. For other jobs, see plumbing costs.

Preventing repeat chokes

HDB's floor trap guide lists habits that help prevent chokes and smells:

  • Keep the grating closed.
  • Do not pour cooking oil or discard food waste and solid items down the floor trap or sink.
  • Use a degreaser on the kitchen sink discharge pipes regularly.
  • Seal the floor trap cover temporarily if it will not be used for a long time, for example during an overseas holiday.
  • Install an anti-mosquito device.

For more bathroom habits, see our guide to bathroom maintenance to prevent chokes.

Before you accept a quote

  • Which trap. Is the price for one floor trap, and is a second trap a separate job?
  • Grating or cover. Is a grating or cover being replaced, and is it in the price?
  • Main pipe. If the choke is in the main sanitary pipe, what happens next, and do you pay for the visit?

Questions

How much does it cost to clear a floor trap choke?

S$50 to S$60 per job, on the 5 of the 22 published lines that name a floor trap. Across all 22 companies that publish a choke clearing rate, rates run from S$50 to S$150 per job, with S$80 in the middle. These are published rates as printed, and a choke in the main sanitary pipe is for the Town Council.

Can I clear a choked floor trap myself?

Yes, when solid matter or grease is the cause and you can reach it. HDB's floor trap guide says to remove the solid materials and, for serious cases, engage a licensed plumber. Wear gloves and never mix drain products. If several floor traps back up at once, contact the Town Council first.

Does a handyman need a PUB licence to clear a floor trap?

No. PUB's simple plumbing works list lets a handyman clear any blockage in any floor trap and replace a floor trap grating or cover. Regulated work beyond the list, such as installing, changing or relocating a toilet bowl, must be done by a PUB Licensed Plumber.

When should I call the Town Council about a choke?

When the choke is in the main sanitary pipe, which the Town Council maintains. HDB's pipes guide says you maintain the sanitary branch pipes in your flat. As practical guidance, if several floor traps back up at once, or neighbours have the same problem, contact the Town Council first.

Why does my floor trap smell?

Particles trapped in the floor trap can cause foul smells. HDB's floor trap guide says to remove them and flush, and to flush the toilet regularly. If the trap will not be used for a long time, such as during an overseas holiday, seal its cover temporarily.

How do I stop my floor trap from choking again?

Keep solid matter and grease out of it. HDB's floor trap guide says to keep the grating closed, not to pour cooking oil or discard food waste and solid items down the floor trap or sink, and to use a degreaser on the kitchen sink discharge pipes regularly.
