How to use this HDB renovation hours checker
Pick a date and the type of work you plan. The checker shows whether that work is allowed that day, the allowed hours and the reason. Use it for a quick "can I drill today" check before putting up a shelf, or to test each day of a renovation schedule before you agree it with your contractor.
Inputs: date and type of work
The checker asks for two things. The first is the date, which must fall in 2026 or 2027. The second is the type of work, chosen from three options:
- General renovation by a contractor. Renovation work done by your contractor that is not one of the noisy works below.
- Restricted noisy works. Demolishing walls, removing wall or floor finishes, cutting tiles, and heavy and excessive drilling.
- DIY works by the household. Jobs you or your family do yourselves.
The examples of restricted noisy works come from HDB's Important Information on Renovations page. The same page says flat owners are responsible for renovations in their flat and must make sure the contractor follows HDB guidelines. Owners must engage only contractors from HDB's Directory of Renovation Contractors.
If you are not sure which trade your job falls under, see which service you need.
Result: allowed, not allowed and why
Each result has three parts: whether the work is allowed or not allowed on that date, the hours it is allowed, and the reason, for example "Sunday", "public holiday" or "eve of Chinese New Year". The hours in the table below are the ones on HDB's renovation page.
| Type of work | Allowed hours | Not allowed on |
|---|---|---|
| General renovation by a contractor | 9am to 6pm on weekdays and Saturdays | Sundays and public holidays |
| Restricted noisy works | 9am to 5pm on weekdays only | Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and the eves of New Year's Day, Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Hari Raya Puasa and Christmas Day |
| DIY works by the household | 7am to 10.30pm | Drilling or hammering from 10.30pm to 7am |
How the calculation works (method and sources)
The checker starts from the hours on HDB's Important Information on Renovations page. It then checks your date against the public holidays gazetted by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), using the lists in MOM's public holidays for 2026 and public holidays for 2027 releases. Each year has 11 gazetted public holidays.
MOM's rule is that when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the next Monday is a public holiday. In MOM's 2026 list, Vesak Day, National Day and Deepavali fall on Sundays, so the checker treats the Mondays after them as public holidays. In MOM's 2027 list, Chinese New Year falls on a Saturday and Sunday, and the Monday after is also a public holiday. The checker includes that extra Monday.
For the festive eves, the checker takes the day before the holiday. For Chinese New Year, the eve is the day before the first day. Restricted noisy works are not allowed on these five eves.
Limits of this checker
Dates outside 2026 and 2027 are not covered.
MOM marked Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji 2026 as subject to confirmation in its 2026 release. If MOM changes either date, check the new date with MOM before you rely on the result.
Your block may have extra conditions on MyHDBPage, so check there as well. Condos follow the rules of their Management Corporation Strata Title (MCST), not these.
The checker also does not tell you whether a job needs a permit. HDB says some works need an HDB permit, and works that do not need one must still follow its guidelines. Our guide to HDB renovation permits explains more.
Planning works around the rules
Before renovations begin, HDB asks you to inform neighbours within a radius of 2 units with a written notice at least 5 days in advance, and to have your contractor put up the Notice of Renovation early. HDB also asks residents to close the main door while works are ongoing, when possible.
Agree the noisy-work days with your contractor at the start. Hacking, tile cutting and heavy drilling have the narrowest window, so place them on weekdays that are not public holidays or festive eves. Check each date in the checker before you book, especially around Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Christmas and New Year.
If you are booking someone for a small drilling job, check the date here first and agree the time with them. You can compare handyman services in the directory. The price depends on the job, so ask whether it is charged as an hourly rate or fixed price.

Questions
Can I drill on a Saturday in an HDB flat?
Not heavy drilling: noisy works are weekdays only. General works are allowed 9am to 6pm on Saturdays. HDB lists heavy and excessive drilling as a restricted work, allowed from 9am to 5pm on weekdays only. DIY drilling by your household follows HDB's DIY window of 7am to 10.30pm instead.
Is renovation allowed on Sundays?
No. HDB does not allow general renovation or restricted noisy works on Sundays or public holidays. General works can resume on Monday from 9am to 6pm and noisy works from 9am to 5pm, unless that Monday is a public holiday. DIY works by your household follow HDB's separate hours of 7am to 10.30pm.
Which eves are noisy works not allowed on?
The eves of New Year's Day, Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Hari Raya Puasa and Christmas Day. HDB does not allow restricted noisy works, such as heavy drilling and cutting tiles, on these five eves. The checker treats an eve as the day before the holiday, and for Chinese New Year, the day before the first day.
Can I drill at night for a DIY job?
No. HDB asks residents not to do DIY drilling or hammering from 10.30pm to 7am, and to keep DIY works to 7am to 10.30pm with noise kept to a minimum. If your drilling or hammering cannot be kept within those hours, HDB asks you to inform your neighbours beforehand.
Is renovation allowed on the Monday after a holiday that falls on a Sunday?
Does the checker work for condos?
No. Condos follow their MCST's by-laws, not the HDB flat rules this checker uses. Check the renovation hours and conditions with your condo management before you book works, because a result from this checker may not match what your condo allows.
