Home cleaning FAQ: choosing a service

Most cleaning questions start with the type of clean you need. The three below cover the choice between regular and one-off cleaning, and what a single visit can include.

Do I need part-time or deep cleaning?

Part-time cleaning keeps a home in order on a regular schedule, such as weekly or fortnightly visits, and is usually priced per hour. Deep cleaning is a one-off, thorough clean, often done before moving in or out, and is usually priced per job. Our post on choosing a part-time cleaner or deep cleaning compares the two.

What does post-renovation cleaning add?

Post-renovation cleaning is a one-off job after the works finish, aimed at the dust and debris that renovation leaves behind. Each company sets its own scope, so ask what is included, for example inside cabinets, windows and disposal. Our post-renovation cleaning page explains what to ask for.

What should a part-time cleaner do in a visit?

A part-time cleaner does the tasks you agree with the company, within the hours you book. Write down your routine chores, such as floors, dusting, bathrooms and the kitchen, and put the most important first in case time runs short. The part-time cleaner task list gives you a list to adapt.

Prices and hours

Of the 26 companies that publish a part-time cleaning line, 9 price it per hour for a part-time cleaner. Their published rates run from S$20 to S$24 per hour as printed, and S$22 per hour is the middle company's own published rate.

Published part-time cleaning rates

For the most common unit (per hour), the lowest published part-time cleaning rates from 9 companies run from S$20 to S$24 per hour (middle rate S$22), for a part-time cleaner. The middle figure is a real published rate, not an average. Each figure is one company's own advertised rate with its conditions, not a quote.

The other lines are printed per visit, per session, per month or without a unit, and many are "From" prices. For every published line with its source, see home cleaning prices.

Is there a minimum number of hours?

Some companies set one, so ask before you book. Many published hourly rates are "From" prices, and some lines in the table above state a minimum, such as 2 hours, 3 hours per session or 3 bookings. Confirm the minimum before you compare rates. The guide to the part-time cleaner hourly rate explains what else to check.

Should the price include GST?

Yes, if the company is registered for Goods and Services Tax (GST). The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) says GST-registered businesses should display final, GST-inclusive prices and may not quote prices without GST. Not every business is registered, and only registered businesses may charge GST. IRAS has an e-Service to check registration.

Rules and safety

Two rules come up most often: who may work as a part-time cleaner in your home, and which cleaning jobs need a licence. The answers below draw on the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the National Environment Agency (NEA).

Can my helper clean another home part-time?

No. MOM says it is an offence for a foreign domestic worker to take on part-time work for another household, even with her employer's consent. Under her Work Permit conditions, she does chores only for her employer. Instead, use a cleaning company; MOM lists Household Services Scheme companies you can contact. See the legal part-time cleaner guide.

Does a home cleaning company need a licence?

No, not for private homes. NEA says cleaning businesses that provide domestic cleaning at a private residence, not including condo common property, do not need to be licensed. Non-domestic general cleaning, such as offices or condo common areas, needs the licence. The cleaning licence check guide explains when it applies.

Before you book

A clear quote makes it easier to compare companies and helps you avoid surprises on the day of the clean.

What should I check in a cleaning quote?

Check what the price covers before you agree. Confirm the hours or scope, the number of cleaners, whether supplies are included and whether the price includes GST. If a quote is vague on any of these, ask for it in writing. The cheap house cleaning red flags guide lists other warning signs.

Can I compare cleaning jobs side by side?

Yes. The cleaning cost estimator helps you compare cleaning jobs before you ask for quotes. When you compare, keep the scope, hours and number of cleaners the same for each option, and check that each price uses the same unit, such as per hour or per job.

Questions

Do I need to be home during the cleaning?

No, you do not have to be, but agree it with the company first. Settle how the cleaner gets in, which rooms to clean and who checks the work at the end. If you will be out, put valuables away and leave a short written list of tasks.

Can I ask the cleaner to use my own products?

Yes, you can ask; agree it with the company before the visit. Ask whether the price changes if you supply the products. Keep each one in its original container with the label, so the cleaner can follow the instructions, and say which surfaces each product is for.

How often should I book a deep clean?

There is no set rule. Consider one before a festive season, such as Chinese New Year, or when you move in or out. Between deep cleans, regular part-time visits handle routine chores. If routine visits no longer keep up with the dirt, that is a sign to book one.

Is the middle rate the usual price?

No. It is one company's own published rate. When the 9 companies that price part-time cleaning per hour are listed from lowest to highest, it is the rate of the company in the middle. Your price depends on the hours, scope and minimum bookings you agree, so ask each company to confirm it.

Can a cleaner disinfect my home?

Yes, if the company offers it; ask before you book. NEA advises following the product label and the manufacturer's instructions, leaving the disinfectant on for the stated contact time and using the protective equipment the Safety Data Sheet prescribes. Ventilate during and after, and never mix different disinfectant products.

What if something is damaged during cleaning?

Report it to the company straight away, with photos. Before you book, ask what the company does if something is damaged, and keep its answer in writing. On the day, point out fragile or valuable items before the cleaner starts, or put them away.
